Ways to ACE your GCE O/N Level Math

Updated: Nov 20, 2023

Achieving success in the General Certificate of Education (GCE) O/N Level Mathematics examination requires a combination of effective study strategies, a clear understanding of the subject matter and a disciplined approach. So, here are some ways for you to ACE your GCE O/N Level Mathematics.

Develop a Strong Foundation

A solid foundation is crucial for excelling in Mathematics. You can begin by thoroughly understanding the fundamental concepts, formulas and equations, reviewing previously done worksheets and ensuring a firm grasp of topics such as algebra, geometry, trigonometry and calculus. Make sure to also clarify any doubts with your teacher or seek additional resources to strengthen your understanding.

Practice Regularly, Review and Revise

Consistent practice is key to mastering Mathematics. Regularly allocate study time to attempt and solve problems, and complete past examination papers. Try to attempt many questions but also ensure that while doing them, you put in the same effort for each question. As with practice, it helps build speed, accuracy and problem-solving skills. Additionally, practising with timed conditions will help simulate the examination environment and improve time management skills.

You can set aside time for regular revision to consolidate your learning. Create concise notes or flashcards summarising key formulas, concepts and problem-solving techniques. Review these materials frequently, particularly before examinations, to reinforce your understanding and retain information much more effectively.

Understand Problem-Solving Techniques

Mathematics is not just about memorising formulas, it involves applying problem-solving techniques. Familiarise yourself with various problem-solving strategies, such as working backwards, drawing diagrams, using logical reasoning and breaking down complex problems into smaller, manageable parts. Develop the ability to analyse the problems and select the appropriate techniques to solve them effectively.

Seek Guidance and Support

Do not hesitate to seek guidance from your Mathematics teacher or classmates. Ask questions, participate actively in class discussions and form study groups to facilitate collaborative learning. Engaging in peer-to-peer teaching can deepen your understanding of concepts while providing an opportunity to reinforce your knowledge by explaining concepts to others.

Test-Taking Strategies

Develop effective test-taking strategies to maximise your performance during the examination. Read questions carefully, identify the required steps or formulas, and plan your approach before attempting each question. Prioritise questions based on their difficulty and allocate time accordingly. If you encounter challenging questions, do not panic and spend so much time on that question. Instead, move on to the other easier questions and return to them later.

Remember, success in Mathematics is attainable with the right mindset, persistence and a commitment to continuous improvement.

All the best!
